I'm using openSuse 10.2 with Firefox 2.0.0.5

My java wasn't installed so I just installed the latest version. I followed Sun's instructions to the letter but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions on troubleshooting this thing?

Yes, I do have Java enabled in the Preferences.

Create the symbolic link to the Java Runtime in the .mozilla/plugins folder in your Home directory.

Okay, I have it functioning now, but things are displaying kind of funny with Java and some things don't work at all. Is there a painless way to update to a newer version?

No, there isn't. Java on Linux hasn't been develped to teh extent of it's windows cousin.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I guess I'll have to figure this one out likely from the command line. Sounds fun.

Do you think it would be too incredibly foolish of me to attempt a switch to Ubuntu?

I guess that's one of the joys of Linux, you can feel free to switch around till you find what works for you.

Not foolish at all. Suse is aim at businesses and Ubuntu is meant for the masses. There are a lot of people who like Ubuntu, there are some who have had problems with it installing. Mostly complaints about it freezing during the installation. That's mostly likely hardware related.

Ubuntu is bleeding edge and therefore not compatible with some hardware. If you have an old system or a very new system with top of the line hardware, Ubuntu won't play well with the hardware.

Thanks

I'm going to hold this thought for a little bit. I don't have Java on Ubuntu yet, so I will likely need to reference this.
