Okay, the user happyjack has a DSL modem, it's about 3-4 years old. On it the ready light will all of a sudden start flashing and he won't have internet.
The modem has apparently been doing this for about a year or so.
I referred him over here because I felt you might be able to help him more than I. Apparently every time he tries to post his modem light will start flashing and it won't let him post. He also apologizes for accidentally posting the question in chit chat.
I don't know what your calling the "ready" light. My DSL modem has lights for power,DSL,internet, Ethernet,USB, and wireless. All are lit but USB and the Internet and Wireless constantly twitter with a blinking light. I live in an old house with crappy wiring. I sometimes lose connection but it doesn't cause me too much trouble. Is his modem his or the ISP's? Has he checked all connections? Does it work on another machine or location? What are the specs for it, brand etc.
its a wirespeed, ADSL modem for verison, don't know what the specs are but it has an activity, link, ready, and power light. my sister had it on her computer for two years and it did the same thing to her. and yes ive checked all the connections 10+ times. no loose connections and the filter for the phone has nothing to do with the problem (i disconnected the splitter from the wall and only hooked up the phone wire for the modem into the wall). there is no other location that i can hook it up (only one port in the entire trailor). finally the modem is mine, it was from a small computer place in moscow, ID called Cactus Computer.
OK, if the modem is working correctly the light will be the following colors:
Power: Green Ready: Green Link: Green Activity: Flashing Amber
If the Ready light is flashing then there is something wrong with the modem itself or the telephone cable that is connected to the modem.
Is the telephone cable is the one that came with the Modem? If so, plug it directly into the wall, not through any filters or splitters. What happens? If it isn't the cable that came with the modem, you need need to get a cable that is meant to be used with a Westell ADSL Modem.
Your modem is eiter a A90-, B90, or C90- series modem. This is what Verizon uses. If it is a A90- or B90- series Wirespeed then has this firmware upgrade been applied? http://www2.verizon.net/help/westell_upgrade/pc.asp
it is the wire that came with the modem. i tried to unplug the splitter from the wall that has the modem and phone cords plugged into it and nothing happened. though as it sits right now the ready light is green and is not flashing. i don't know if i did something or if that means the verizon signal is actually coming through correctly. i also just looked and the modem is a B90 series. how will i know that the upgrade was applied?
i forgot to add something to the second sentence. when i unplugged the splitter i unplugged the wire that is connected to the modem from the splitter and connected it directly to the wall. that was when i saw nothing different.
do i not need to install anything past restarting? i followed the instructions and when i restarted i expected to have to do more steps but nothing came up. did i do it correctly?
still having problems. i am currently signed on through my neighbors wireless connection. ive tried shutting off the modem twice now and waited over 5 minutes each time and the light still won't stop flashing. if you have any suggestions please let me know. i don't feel like using the neighbors connection all the time.
adding to the upgrade. when i tried to continue with the installation from step 9 it couldn't find the modem and i couldn't go any further. could that be part of the cord problem?
Happyjack, try running a "Home Run" wire from the NID (The box on the outside of the trailer, where you Teleco wiring terminates. What this does, is allow you to run a new wire with a good known jack for just the modem. If still getting disconnects after doing that, then it is a Teleco issue.
Also, if it is a Bridge, and has been around for a while, it can be going bad, or even just the Wall-Wart (Transformer) could be going bad. If you are able to, you may be able to get away with purchasing a new ADSL modem (Best Buy sells them), or contact your ISP and let them know that it is going bad. This also allows you to verify if the modem/bridge is going bad. I threw out the map a long time ago. Now I go my own direction!
