From the SJ-R here in Springfield, IL.

An Athens man was arrested early Thursday after he allegedly was caught with 33 marijuana plants in the trunk of his car. Alexander E. Ortiz, 20, was taken to the Sangamon County Jail. Police said they also found a plastic container with marijuana and a drug pipe inside the car he was driving.

Officers on patrol about 12:45 a.m. at 25th Street and Sherwood Avenue saw a 1992 Buick LeSabre with illegally tinted windows and pulled it over. Ortiz was driving and was unable to produce proof of insurance. He also had a suspended driver's license, police said.

After handcuffing Ortiz and making arrangements to have the car towed, officers did an inventory of the contents. When they opened the trunk, they allegedly found two plastic foil-lined buckets filled with soil and several marijuana plants growing in each one. Ortiz allegedly told police the plants were for personal use.

There will be probable cause. They smelled something or the guy agreed to let them look.

But, who ever heard of growing in a car trunk?

At some point, someone is going to challenge the Constitutionality of "Inventories" or at least if the evidence found during an "inventory" is admissible in a court of law . I bet the Police are conducting "inventories" under the pretext of protecting the property of the vehicle owner and insulating the PD from allegations of theft and such.

Growing MJ in the trunck of a car is a new one, that's for sure.

The police around here have done those types of "inventories" for years. If the victim can't afford a good lawyer they end up in prison, with that amount anyway. It's their word against the citizen and very rare to find a judge that doesn't side with Johnny Law. I worked as a dispatcher in a tiny little town when I first left home. What an eye opener and the root of a life long cynicism for police actions. I saw stuff that was so totally illegal, immoral and downright wrong all in the name of the law, I'm tainted.
