So as of late, backing up data has been a bit more of a concern. For my pictures, I've been dumping everything on to Archival DVDs and putting it in the Safety Deposit Box, everything else, while it wouldn't be a catastrophe if it was rendered unavailable, I would be more than a little pissed off.

So here's where I have questions. I'm looking for a low powered (read: something that won't send my power bill through the roof) option for a backup system that I can do a nightly backup to.

As of right now, I have 2 sets of 300GB SATA drives set up in a RAID1 software on Linux on my main desktop computer. The plan is eventually to move that to a RAID5 hardware for within that computer.

So is it as simple as just setting up a new computer, slamming a big hard drive into it and setting a chron job to turn it off when the data is completely backed up?

Or do I need to find an inexpensive NAS like device to attach on and just run the backups to that?

Speedy, you're talking about something I know very little about. Sorry, can't help this time. Maybe someone will come along with a good, in-depth, answer.

It's all good. Thanks anyways.

This just means that I have to do some good old fashioned research. I'll probably learn more this way. I'll let you know how this one turns out.
